Bainbridge completely misses the issue

Professor Bainbridge responds here to critics of his earlier post, which called proponents of enforcing our immigration laws "nuts" and "racists". (Our response to his earlier comments is here)

He says:

My post on Gov. Schwarzenegger's sudden decision to run to the nativist right on immigration drew the usual hostile emails and trackbacks. Give it up folks; I'm pro-immigration, legal or otherwise. Why? Because I'm a pragmatist on this issue. As long as illegals can make more money here than there, they'll keep coming. So my bottom line message is: Wake up and smell the coffee; California's future is Latino.

His reply completely missed the point. It's fine if he wants to argue the position that we ought to disregard the laws of the United States, though that's an odd position for a law professor to take.

What was not fine was his insinuation that anyone who disagrees is a racist nut. That's the sort of foolish smear we'd expect from someone like Al Sharpton.
