Newsweek Roundup

Not too much to add to the Newsweek "apology" over their bogus "Koran flushing" story. It's really an old story with different details - MSM jumps to biased conclusion about story that makes U.S. military look bad, rushes to press with sketchy evidence... Just another day.

Here's a quick roundup of what others are saying:

Austin Bay writes:

History may see Newsweek’s fatal “Koran flushing” story as the US press’ Abu Ghraib.

Under any circumstances, Newsweek’s flagrant, tragic error is an error a long-time-coming. The magazine’s “apology” doesn’t begin to account for the damage.

The Anchoress writes: Prove a negative: Newsweek redefines journalism ala Rather/Mapes

Captains' Quarters notes the Newsweek strategy is to blame the Pentagon for not denying the story.

Little Green Footballs notes how some on the left (Kos-Kooks) are attributing the criticism of Newsweek to a right-wing smear campaign. But isn't everything a right-wing smear campaign to those poor misguided people? Nothing is ever new over there it seems. Put on the tinfoil hat, shout a few obcenities, and off they go...

Michelle Malkin has more here and here.

Patterico with the MSM standard in a nutshell:

Today we’re getting a little insight into just exactly what Big Media’s standards really are for running a correction. Specifically, if you report something based on a single anonymous source, who later tells you he’s not sure what he said is right, you have no obligation to retract anything. Because, hey! . . . it could be true!

La Shawn Barber has more in her extensive roundup of commentary on the story.

Jay Tea at Wizbang puts the blame for the deaths where it really belongs:

So, bring on the abuse, the sanctions, the penalties for Newsweek. Ban their reporters from covering events. Contact and boycott their advertisers. Pillory them in public. Blame them for the damage to our diplomatic efforts. Mock them. Deride them. Taunt them. Make them stand in the corner at press events while wearing silly hats. Use back issues as toilet paper.

But don't hold them liable for the deaths. To do that is to excuse the real people to blame -- the rioters themselves.

We think that about covers it. There's no need to choose; there's plenty of blame to go around here. Blame Newsweek for their irresponsible reporting, but ultimately blame the rioters for rioting and killing.
